Pets age much faster than we do. The life span of a dog depends on its size or breed. In general, the larger the breed or size of the dog, the shorter the life span. For example, in a study of lifespans, only 13% of giant breed dogs lived to be over 10 years old. Conversely, 38% of small breed dogs live to be over 10 years of age.

If Boomerang’s name sounds familiar it’s because we featured her here a couple of years ago. Boomerang’s humble beginnings could not have predicted her happy ending. When we met her, Boomerang was a sweet 5-month-old about to go into her first heat. A street person found her when she was a tiny homeless puppy and took her into his care. He called her Boomerang because of her ecstatic puppy runs that led right back into his arms. Silver Rescue paid for her surgery and other medical care plus a micro-chip. When we visited their camp under a bridge each month with flea and heartworm prevention, we could see that Boomerang was loved and doing well. So far, so good. Life on the streets is uncertain for both humans and pets. Boomerang’s guardian often seemed impaired and his hold on safety and stability for himself and his dog was tenuous. We hoped for the best, but the eventual outcome was predictable. One day Boomerang’s guardian disappeared. He obviously planned to return because he tethered her to a milk crate filled with river rocks. By nightfall, Boomerang was scared and hungry, so she went looking for him. She scaled the steep embankment, dumping the rocks from the crate as she went. Still tethered to the crate, she stepped into the busy intersection. Blinded by the headlights of on-coming cars and trucks, she searched for a way across the street. She was frightened but desperate to find him. Luckily, a kind young woman came along and guided her to safety. We were so glad to have micro-chipped Boomerang; otherwise we would never have known what happened to her. The young woman traced her back to Silver Rescue and eventually adopted her. When the adoption proved not a good match, Boomerang returned to Silver Rescue. She was confused by the changes in her young life, so we sent her to doggy boot camp to learn obedience commands and regain confidence in humans and other dogs. Not long afterward, she joined her new family where she now lives happily with her roommate, a rescued black Lab. Recently Boomerang’s mom, Patsy, sent us this video. It was mostly to show us Boomerang and her sister happily riding on a four-wheeler with their parents on their farm. The video is of Patsy and her life. We think you will enjoy Patsy’s story with us and see for yourself why sweet Boomerang is so happy there. Piper Piper is a sweet, healthy, playful young pup. You wouldn’t to know is from looking at her today but this little girl almost didn’t make it. At 5 months old she looked no more than a 10 week old puppy. She fought hard to survive. With good food, lots of care and love she turned into this little beauty. You can follow her story here. Piper is ready now for her own home. She is full of love and puppy silliness and will make a good companion to another pup or humans who would like a walking partner and she’s good cats and respectful children. She weighs approximately 22 and we don’t think she’ll get much bigger. For adoption information please go here. I always make it a point to share special time with my old dog Alex. Alex is a good boy. He helps calm the new overwhelmed and worried dogs that arrive at Silver Rescue. Alex never causes trouble. He patiently waits for my attentions while I work with the other pets in the rescue. As a reward, I treat him to special excursions; both Alex and I are always mesmerized by the discovery of beautiful scenery when we travel. And so it was that this past April Alex and I went on a vacation of a life time. We went to Florida for a family reunion. Among other places we went to St. Augustine, the oldest city in the US. My family rented a section of motel bungalows and we had a spot of beach all to ourselves. It was marvelous. We had the prefect spot on earth where my old dog was able to be about off leash. Of course, we did the normal touristy things and checked out downtown St. Augustine and the old fort. We went to a rookery at an Alligator Farm where the trees were full of nests and birds of every description. But mostly we walked the beach every day at least once in blustery weather, rain and sunshine and that was Alex’s favorite. The smiles on his face, the joy in his step were priceless. He overcame his fear of the foamy waves and soon splashed in the water with content. He checked out the birds and the turtles. And he loved the freedom of running on the beach in the early morning sunlight. Here are some pictures of the marvelous times my old dog Alex had. |
