Freckles' Rescue
Freckles never had a chance. From the day he was born he was doomed to fail. Born into a backyard breeding system he was sold too soon to be properly socialized to dogs and humans he could trust. At six weeks old and ripped away from his family, from the only warmth and love he would likely receive over a life time, he craved human attention but rarely received it. His only toy was his food bowl as evidenced by the joy and abandon with which he entertained himself with it. Growing up neglected and practically alone he had no gauge of what was right or wrong. However, true to his breed, his love for humans remained great even though he was betrayed by them all countless times.

When he was about a year old he found himself alone, starving and wandering aimlessly looking for someone who would feed him and love him and someone he could love in return. He was dangerously thin and afraid when his luck seemed to change for the better. A kind human took him home and nurtured him back to health and showed him what “real” love was all about. He grew healthy and he was happy for the first time in his life.
But there was trouble brewing in paradise. Freckles and one of his new doggie companions, a husky, were both alpha males and before long the worst happened. Over an unspayed neighbor female who was allowed to go in and out of heat year in, year out, they got into their first fight. Until that day they got along fine and were friends but that day everything changed. His human parents did what we all tend to do in such a situation – break up the fight. The hardest lesson for humans to learn is to stay out of a dog fight. The result? You guessed it! The dad got seriously bitten and while at the ER reports where filed and the AC was called. As is always the case, the pit bull had to go to AC. The husky got to go to the Animal Clinic. So Freckles found himself in 10 day quarantine and if dad couldn’t come up with the money to release him his life would be over.

The dad did not have the money and turned to Silver Rescue for help. We did just that. We had met Freckles before and knew he was a good dog and worth it. After this fight though his new family wasn’t sure how to deal with two alpha males. They considered putting him up for adoption so we decided to send him to doggie boot camp where he would learn manners, and the socialization he so sorely needed. We also wanted to know if he was a danger to other dogs or if this was just an isolated issue. We were gratified to learn that he was a star pupil and never caused an ounce of trouble with any dog there.
When he came home, his family decided they really wanted to keep him and they were taught how to hone his obedience training and how to keep Freckles and the husky out of trouble with each other. Freckles continued to do well. But there now was this underlying hatred between the two dogs that just would not go away. He tried very hard but the unsprayed female was still next door and he just could not tolerate his companion. His humans did not recognize in time that things were not right and soon the second fight happened. Again the humans got in the middle but this time without serious consequences.
This time Silver Rescue insisted on proper isolation, fencing and runs to keep the dogs safe from each other while outside, and proper crating rotation practices when inside. All dogs, there were two more that Freckles got along with famously, would get their individual attention and snuggle time with their humans so no one was neglected and unloved and rules and discipline continued to be part of their daily routine. Then one day, dad left home for a few hours and mom thought Freckles needed to go out for a little sunshine. The problem was that she didn’t close the gate to the rest of the yard where the husky was and instead of taking him out on his prong collar she took him out on a slip leash. The two saw each other and the opening. She couldn’t hold him. The fight was on. And again she stepped in between and tried to stop it. And yes, she got bitten in the process. Again, Freckles ended up at AC and his companion at the animal hospital for their 10 day quarantine, with Freckles once again on death row.
All seemed doomed and hopeless as neither dad nor Silver Rescue had the money to get him out. But the light is always darkest just before dawn. An unexpected donation allowed us to free Freckles. We knew that Freckles could not go home again. The hatred between the two dogs was too great and would never go away. But Freckles had a record now. Who would adopt him? Who would be willing to take a chance on him? Rescues, including SR, were full. Freckles is a good dog and with the right person, in the right situation he would do well. He had proven that during the time he lived with his trainer. But finding that would be difficult.

Every dog at Smiling Dog Farms has his own yard with escape proof fencing and a 4x5 two story townhome with loft. A portion of the yard even will have a roof over it so he can go out on rainy days without getting wet. His play yard will be 12 x 16, big enough to run, play, bark and sleep whenever he wants to. Each yard is stand alone so dogs can’t fence fight. Freckles will get daily care, love and companionship from his care taker, and vet care when needed. But all this does not come without cost.
Freckles is not unique. I wish he were. There are too many like him every day that don’t get the chance they deserve. But this boy has a chance at sanctuary and with any luck the perfect person might even come along for him and he will be able to live in a home of his own with all the love he was due from the moment he was born.

Freckles has a GREAT opportunity to go live at the Sanctuary. He has no where else to go. The cost for his new home is $1262 (Smiling Dog Farms will pay for the labor to build it). We were given a loan of $300 to board him for a month while we try to raise the money and we have to repay that. So we write you today with high hopes that we can raise the money to give Freckles his last and only chance at life and love.
