Back in Black 2
_      No Adoption Fees During Back in Black 2 – through May 31

Even though they make wonderful pets, black dogs and cats are often overlooked for adoption – perhaps because they are more difficult to photograph or because some people still believe in negative myths and stereotypes about them.  Of course, anyone who guardians a black cat or dog will tell you how wonderful they are in every way, which is why Silver Rescue is proud to join forces with Best Friends No More Homeless Pets Network partners across the country to give them the attention they deserve.

_Kimmy’s Plea
_     Kimmy and her siblings were born to a starved former house cat who was abandoned, intact and unvaccinated.  Mom tried her best to care for her babies but she was too weak to catch much food. Many people think that since cats are predators, they will be able to fend for themselves when forced to live outside on their own. House cats, however, are accustomed to having their food set before them in a dish.  They never learn or lose their ability to hunt.  It takes experience, determination and getting very hungry before they succeed as hunters, and some never do.

Neighborhood kids tormenting Mom with sticks and rocks brought her to the attention of a good Samaritan.  Thank goodness the children didn’t discover the kittens!   Understandably skittish, Mom needed a little coaxing to allow the good Samaritan to take her little family home.  There, despite efforts at bottle feeding, the sickly kittens died one by one.   Kimmy alone was strong and feisty enough to survive.

But there was a price for the poor beginning.  Both mother and daughter suffered recurring upper respiratory infections (URIs). In normal cats, a small hole called a puncta is present in both the upper and lower eyelids very close to the where the lids meet near the nose. Tears normally flow down these drainage holes into a central collecting sac that sits just under the skin below the eye. From this sac, a small tube or duct carries the tears into the nose, helping to keep the nose and nostrils moist.  Baby Kimmy’s multiple URIs caused severe scar tissue in her nasal passages, so although her tear ducts continued to produce tears normally, Kimmy’s tears overflowed onto her cheeks, causing a perpetually wet little face.

A number of attempts – some requiring anesthesia – have failed to solve Kimmy’s problem.  The specialist recommends a trip to the University of Tennessee in Knoxville for a solution that will allow her to live normally and eventually find a forever home.  For now, she is unadoptable with her sickly-looking face, uncomfortably damp facial fur, and flying moisture whenever she shakes her head.

The operation will cost $1,200 - $2,000, depending on the extent of the blockage.  That may sound like a lot of money for one little cat.   But isn’t that what rescue is all about – finding a way to help a pretty, playful, otherwise-healthy young animal recover from a poor beginning and have a chance at a normal life and a loving home?

Freckles' Rescue

Freckles never had a chance.  From the day he was born he was doomed to fail.  Born into a backyard breeding system he was sold too soon to be properly socialized to dogs and humans he could trust.  At six weeks old and ripped away from his family, from the only warmth and love he would likely receive over a life time, he craved human attention but rarely received it.  His only toy was his food bowl as evidenced by the joy and abandon with which he entertained himself with it.   Growing up neglected and practically alone he had no gauge of what was right or wrong.  However, true to his breed, his love for humans remained great even though he was betrayed by them all countless times.

When he was about a year old he found himself alone, starving and wandering aimlessly looking for someone who would feed him and love him and someone he could love in return.    He was dangerously thin and afraid when his luck seemed to change for the better.  A kind human took him home and nurtured him back to health and showed him what “real” love was all about.   He grew healthy and he was happy for the first time in his life.

But there was trouble brewing in paradise.  Freckles and one of his new doggie companions, a husky, were both alpha males and before long the worst happened.   Over an unspayed neighbor female who was allowed to go in and out of heat year in, year out, they got into their first fight.  Until that day they got along fine and were friends but that day everything changed.   His human parents did what we all tend to do in such a situation – break up the fight.  The hardest lesson for humans to learn is to stay out of a dog fight.  The result?  You guessed it!  The dad got seriously bitten and while at the ER reports where filed and the AC was called.  As is always the case, the pit bull had to go to AC.  The husky got to go to the Animal Clinic.  So Freckles found himself in 10 day quarantine and if dad couldn’t come up with the money to release him his life would be over.
The dad did not have the money and turned to Silver Rescue for help.   We did just that.  We had met Freckles before and knew he was a good dog and worth it.   After this fight though his new family wasn’t sure how to deal with two alpha males.  They considered putting him up for adoption so we decided to send him to doggie boot camp where he would learn manners, and the socialization he so sorely needed.   We also wanted to know if he was a danger to other dogs or if this was just an isolated issue.  We were gratified to learn that he was a star pupil and never caused an ounce of trouble with any dog there.

When he came home, his family decided they really wanted to keep him and they were taught how to hone his obedience training and how to keep Freckles and the husky out of trouble with each other. Freckles continued to do well.  But there now was this underlying hatred between the two dogs that just would not go away.  He tried very hard but the unsprayed female was still next door and he just could not tolerate his companion.  His humans did not recognize in time that things were not right and soon the second fight happened.  Again the humans got in the middle but this time without serious consequences.

This time Silver Rescue insisted on proper isolation, fencing and runs to keep the dogs safe from each other while outside, and proper crating rotation practices when inside.    All dogs, there were two more that Freckles got along with famously, would get their individual attention and snuggle time with their humans so no one was neglected and unloved and rules and discipline continued to be part of their daily routine.    Then one day, dad left home for a few hours and mom thought Freckles needed to go out for a little sunshine.   The problem was that she didn’t close the gate to the rest of the yard where the husky was and instead of taking him out on his prong collar she took him out on a slip leash.   The two saw each other and the opening.  She couldn’t hold him.  The fight was on.   And again she stepped in between and tried to stop it.   And yes, she got bitten in the process.    Again, Freckles ended up at AC and his companion at the animal hospital for their 10 day quarantine, with Freckles once again on death row.

All seemed doomed and hopeless as neither dad nor Silver Rescue had the money to get him out.  But the light is always darkest just before dawn.  An unexpected donation allowed us to free Freckles.  We knew that Freckles could not go home again.   The hatred between the two dogs was too great and would never go away.  But Freckles had a record now.  Who would adopt him?  Who would be willing to take a chance on him? Rescues, including SR, were full.  Freckles is a good dog and with the right person, in the right situation he would do well.  He had proven that during the time he lived with his trainer.  But finding that would be difficult.

Freckles’ Chance at Happiness

Then came dawn…  What about a sanctuary?  Smiling Dog Farms(www.smilingdogfarms.org) in TX is a place where dogs that are rejected by society for one reason or another can go and live out their lives in safety and with love.  Some even get a chance at finding their forever home.   We contacted them and they said yes, they would take Freckles in.

Every dog at Smiling Dog Farms has his own yard with escape proof fencing and a 4x5 two story townhome with loft.  A portion of the yard even will have a roof over it so he can go out on rainy days without getting wet.  His play yard will be 12 x 16, big enough to run, play, bark and sleep whenever he wants to.  Each yard is stand alone so dogs can’t fence fight.  Freckles will get daily care, love and companionship from his care taker, and vet care when needed.   But all this does not come without cost.

Freckles is not unique.  I wish he were.  There are too many like him every day that don’t get the chance they deserve.  But this boy has a chance at sanctuary and with any luck the perfect person might even come along for him and he will be able to live in a home of his own with all the love he was due from the moment he was born.

Freckles has a GREAT opportunity to go live at the Sanctuary.  He has no where else to go.   The cost for his new home is $1262 (Smiling Dog Farms will pay for the labor to build it).   We were given a loan of $300 to board him for a month while we try to raise the money and we have to repay that.  So we write you today with high hopes that we can raise the money to give Freckles his last and only chance at life and love.

We need to raise $1562.00 for his new home and to repay the loan.  We need your help to give Freckles his life back.  Please help us.  All donations are tax deductible.

Adopt Me!
Picture
The cats shown here were rescued by a Good Samaritan who could not stand the abuse and abandonment she saw day in-day out at her apartment complex.  She rescued them, nursed them back to health, and tried to find them homes.  Some of you might remember BOO, who lost her eye to such abuse – she was rescued by this lady.  However, without the means to network, she could not afford a computer, they mostly ended up staying with her.  Here and there she was able to place one in a forever home.  A few times some rescues would take some of the younger cats but as the cats got older and their window of opportunity passed the chance of adoption passed them by.  Now the foster mom is losing her home and must find homes for these cats.  We have a month to try to place these babes.  Please help us network them and help us find homes for them.  If you can foster, we would appreciate that also.

In an effort to place these cats quickly, there will be no adoption fee.  However, our normal adoption practices will be kept in place, i.e.  application, proof of employment, 3 references, veterinarian check, home visit.   If you would like to help any of these kitties by adopting, fostering or financial support, please contact us at SilverRescue@gmail.com.

Please share this with your friends.

Black Jack - Dad to Mickey

Breed:  Domestic Shorthair
Color:   Black
Age:     3-4 yrs as of 3-12
Sex:     Male
Pets & People:  Good with cats; good with small dogs; good with people.
Children:  6yrs and older
Vetting:  Neutered 8-3-09.  Vaccinated; Skin issues due to flea infection-under treatment; no rabies

Black Jack is a sweet boy.  He loves everyone and is good with cats and dogs.  But he loves best of all his real life son Mickey.  They love nothing better than to snuggle together and would love to be adopted together to keep each other company for the rest of their lives.  They have been through so much, it would be a shame to separate them.

Black Jack was surrendered by his young owner, an 18 yr old when he had to move.  His parents would not allow him to take Black Jack with him.  He knew about people dumping cats and he didn’t want to do that to his kitty.  Commendable.  There are many young kids who would not have been that responsible.

Mickey loves nothing better than being petted or snuggle with his real life dad, Black Jack.  They would love to be adopted together to keep each other company for the rest of their lives.  They have been though so much.  It would be a shame to separate them.

We don’t know what attacked him when he was a kitten.  Was it the TomCat that had it in its mouth when the Good Samaritan showed up?  Or was he injured by nasty neighborhood kids that are abound in that area?  Or did a hawk, looking for food, attack him?  Was the TomCat really just trying to carry the injured kitten to safety?  Whatever it was, when the Good Samaritan shouted at the TomCat and he released the kitten.  There was blood everywhere.  He was rushed to the vet.  Against all odds he didn’t die that night.  His time was not up.  He healed well but his left eye was lost and he sustained a bit of nerve damage on that side of his face – it does not hinder him in anyway.  He’s not handicapped.  He’s just fine ~ he just is a one eyed cat.  He has also healed well emotionally from that horrible day and is today a sweet house cat.  He is a little shy at first but with love and caresses warms up quickly.

Sex:  Female
Pets & People:  Tolerates cats-prefers being only cat; good with dogs; shy of people at first.
Children:  6yrs and older
Vetting:  Spayed 3-12-07, vaccinated, no rabies

Pebbles thought that the warm engine of the car was a safe place for her kittens to be.  Little did she know that it could also be the death of her and her little family.  And indeed, one of her kittens lost a tail to such an injury.   When all her babies found homes, Pebbles was left behind.  Few people want adult cats, even if they are beautiful like Pebbles.   But it is her time now.  Won’t you find it in your heart to give this young lady your love?  She will tolerate other cats but prefers to be an only kitty.  Children should be 6yrs old and over.

Color:  Black
Sex:  Male
Pets & People:  Good with cats and dogs;  shy of people at first
Children:  6yrs and older
Vetting:  Neutered ( ears clipped), vaccinated, no rabies

Micah is sweet, good with humans, playful and good with other cats.  He was born at the edge of the woods to a mom who was very sick and who had run out of strength to find a safer place in the woods.  His siblings died one by one.  It was heartbreaking but she did not have enough milk to nourish them and the kitten formula came too late to do them any good.  But Micah survived and grew into a strapping young man.  His rescuer didn’t have enough money to get him vetted at a regular vet so he was neutered at a trap/neuter/release facility and got his ear clipped as if he were a feral cat.  It is barely noticeable.  And no, he is not feral but a loving, secure, lap cat.

Color:  Tuxedo – black and white
Sex:  Male
Pets & People:  Will tolerate cats and small calm dogs; great with people
Children:  6yrs and older
Vetting:   Neutered, fully vetted, micro chipped

Boots is a big gentle, loving boy.  Seems to get along well enough with cats and small calm dogs.  He is great with people and doesn’t really need another pet for company.  He is the perfect companion.  Wants to be with you but not clingy.  Because he’s not happy to have to live in a crate right now he’s banged up his nose a little.  He will be very happy to be adopted to someone real soon and get his life back.

Boots was a stray for about a year.  His people left him when they moved.  Why is a mystery.  He is so good and they had already neutered him.

_Bella Marie is the sweetest dog.  She is a love bug and she just glows with happiness
when you pet her and give her any bit of attention.

_ True to her breed, she is a very loyal, loving girl who gave her owner everything she had in her to give.  She was bred and gave her owner litter after litter of puppies. Through the years her body wore out and she began to grow Cherry Eye. She needed medical care but her owner wasn’t going to spend a dime on her.  When her body was all used up and she was no longer a good breeder, they got rid of her.

Bella Marie is in good hands now and she will get the care she needs to make her healthy again and ready for adoption.  Bella Marie will need surgery to remove the Cherry Eye and while she’s under anesthesia we will go ahead and get her spayed.  She won’t ever have to make another baby.  While she’s at the vet we will also have her vaccinated, dewormed and heartworm tested.

Last month you were kind and helped us vet Turtle.  Turtle will be home soon.  I’ll send you photos then to show you how beautiful she looks now.  This month we need your help again, for Bella Marie.  The surgery for her spay and Cherry Eye normally costs around $800.  But we have found a vet that is rescue friendly and who will do the same thing for a considerable savings - approximately $350 – $400.  It depends on how long she needs to stay at the vet for healing time.

_As a No More Homeless Pets Network partner, Silver Rescue will take part in Best Friends’ highly successful $5 Felines national adoption event November 26 – December 3. During the event, cats and kittens age 5 months and older can be adopted for a $5 adoption fee. Our adoptable cats come in many sizes, shapes, colors and temperaments – from sassy to shy. They are healthy, happy, fully vetted and even have microchips. We’ll continue our normal screening process to ensure that our bargain babies get safe, loving, forever homes: written application, reference check, home visit, and adoption contract.

Silver Rescue is proud to partner with Best Friends and humane groups all across the country to bring about a time when homeless, unwanted animals are no longer being destroyed in shelters, and when every healthy dog or cat can be guaranteed a good life in a caring home. Together, we can save lives, and help make our shared dream of No More Homeless Pets a reality.

Pictured above are just some of our cuties available for adoption. Please visit our Adopt page to see them all and find your new best friend!

Back in Black Adoption Event
Black tie, black t-shirt or a little black dress... this year’s hot trend is furry, black and will lick your face or purr for you. Whatever your taste, add style and love to your life by adopting a beautiful black dog or cat during the national "Back in Black" adoption promotion. Adoption fees for black animals are 50% off!

Silver Rescue is holding a "Back in Black" promotion through Saturday, Sept. 17 to highlight adorable, adoptable black dogs, cats, puppies and kittens. It is part of 34-day promotion across the United States being supported by national animal welfare organization Best Friends Animal Society.

Rescue groups and shelters across the country know black cats and dogs are often incredibly friendly and loving, sometimes really silly, they can be your best hiking buddy or a real lap baby... they each have their own personality. Unfortunately, they get overlooked. By participating in this national promotion and featuring only black animals -- and cutting adoption fees in half -- we are hoping people will take a second look and get to know these characters for the wonderful four-footed family members they can be.

This adoption event is part of Best Friends Animal Society’s lofty, but reachable goal of No More Homeless Pets, which aims to end the killing of dogs and cats in America’s shelters. Silver Rescue is a participating member of the No More Homeless Pets Network which offers help and support to animal rescue groups that save lives in their communities.

Adopt Amigo & Flip Flop
Amigo and FlipFlop are ready for Forever Homes!

DudeMan aka Amigo, shown above on left, is a most handsome boy in his tuxedo coat, white whiskers and necktie. He is perfectly built and looks like an exotic Pharaoh cat. He is a sweet, affectionate cat.  His favorite place to be is in his person’s lap. He is a laidback boy, yet athletic and playful.

FlipFlop, on right, is the spitting image of her brother in looks and attitude, just a little smaller. They love to greet you at the door with twists and turns and reels and writhings to show you just how happy they are to see you and they request belly rubs in return.

The siblings are good with cats and calm dogs.  They are not use to children and noisy environments; however, calm children 6 yrs old and older who are respectful of animals should be fine. They are a little shy around new people, but they adjust within a few days to new situations.

We found the 8 week old siblings (6 babies as well as their mother) last October 2010 in a very bad and dangerous neighborhood. Fearing for their safety so near Halloween, we immediately set out to rescue them. We were able to get all but one baby and the mother. In the days to come we tried to find them but we never saw them again. We can only hope someone kind took them in.

We believe the kittens were born mid September 2010. They appear to be Siamese or Oriental Shorthair mixes. They have that oriental look to them. They are not very vocal but sweetly greet you with a gentle meow. Amigo and FlipFlop are looking for their forever home. They are great companions to each other and we would love to see them adopted together; however, they will be fine if adopted individually.

Amigo and FlipFlop will be adopted to an inside forever home only. Reference, and vet checks, as well as home visits are required. Adoption fees are 50% off through September 17, 2011. The adoption fee will be used to help other kittens in need. For an application please email us at SilverRescue@gmail.com.
